Just wondering what everyones forum software of choice is. Currently my favorite is Invision Power Board. Its packed with almost as many features as VBulliten but its totally free.

Whats your preference ?

MY favorite is VBB, if you have the money to buy it, i would buy, its a very good forum to skin, andwhatnot.

PHPBB is also good forum to skin, and IBF is good but hard to skin.

VBulletin by far, but as far as 'freeware' goes, PHPBB.

VBulletin if you can afford it, phpBB if you can't :)

I think VBulletin, Invision Power Board and phpBB are all good. I am not familiar with the rest, but for those three, they are really good. They have some differences, but all have load of features. They're good.

I have been using Phorum for years and I find it really cool. When choosing forum software you must clearly understaтв what is the point. If you need a small but still powerfull, not overwhelmed with unneeded featureset, seriousely-looking forum then Phorum is for you. I generally use it for small forums for buisness websites (except hosting companies forums which should in fact be a community of loyal users IMHO).

If you need a community-style forum my choice is Invision. I find it really brilliant (and free :) ) . Once upon a tim eI have tried vB... well... quite good, but you need to buy it. Then those callhomes disturb me. Finally the code is quite dirty making it not a good toy to play with. Invision's code is clear and nice so modding is a pleasure ;)

It's gotta be VBulletin for me too.

vBulletin for me; just that its biggest disadvantage compared to the others is its price tag, but it's all worth it, especially if you buy it earlier on since then you'll be able to use it before you even start up a website with other free alternatives so you don't have to migrate everything over.

without any indecision, VBulletin! :)

PhpBB for me.

Works just as good as vB and it's free. And plus, I've noticed vB tends to run slower than PhpBB a lot of the time. :\

I like Invision for the ease of skinning it compared to phpBB, havent really tried vB yet but I dont plan on trying it unless someone buys it for me :p

I love IPB. It is indeed the best forum software out there. vBulletin is also good, but it costs alot. IPB is free, and it also has alot of mods and great themes available for it.

IPB is really good too, it's probably second to PhpBB for me. :D

But what are you talking about skinning? PhpBB is easy as hell to skin. And there're probably more mods for PhpBB than for IPB just because PhpBB is more popular right now. ;)

I like phpBB - Probably the simplest php script there is to install.

I was very surprised at how quickly and easily it installed :)

Cool link -

You can also download mods and graphics for phpBB on their web site as well.

Yeah, I know you can.

It's easier to go through phpbbhacks.com because it's all organized better than phpbb.com.

cdingman
June 27th, 2004, 02:51 PM
And it also appears that they have more downloads.

Yeah, it does. :D

Also, if you're an IPB fan, make sure to check out the InvisionThings Network. http://www.invisionthings.com/

VB is a very popular one and I don't know why people are saying it's a little slower, seems just as fast as all the others.

Most of my favorite forums all use VB :) coincidence .. or not

vB is supposedly more professional.. though I've never really thought it was any better than any of the other forum software available for free.. especially considering the cost.. heh.

vB is very nice, and considering the support you get, it's the ONLY choice if you are looking for a true PRO board. However, IPB is awesome! phpbb just plain blows, guys. Sorry... It is slow and has security holes out the wazoo. It's the IE of forum software... Those of you who run it should really stop. Right now. Seriously.

Now, one thing that troubles me about this poll is that it doesn't mention "Simple Machines", which is the next-generation YaBB board. It is seriously cool, fellas.

phpBB doesn't really have many security issues anymore, and it's not slow either.. unless your a 56k'er.. then everything is slow.

I like phpBB.

I just set up a new forum using it the other day.

my vote goes to VB as it has most features, and good management (father of all board)
Invision is fine too but most features copy from another type of board and have bad SQL management.
