you can install php, apache and mysql on your computer ... using phpdev (http://www.firepages.com.au/) ... thats how i started to play around with php, and now ive mastered it.

That depends. I didn't and I won't use any of those distros, I have just downloaded latest Apache, mySQL and PHP, *carefully* read the readmes, installs etc., then included manuals and all was done in 2 hours or so...
The problem is that most of us just skip the manuals and then they complain that all this is averbloated and way too complicated.
So to sum that all, if you want to get your feets wet with PHP, there are 2 ways:
1) Install the AMP platform from scratch (Apache + mySQL + PHP)
2) Use a distro like phpdev or phpTriade (not free AFAIK)
Then when you get this stuff up and running you can start working. The first thing to get is of course The PHP Manual (extended CHM edition) from php.net. Then, there are couple of books for beginners by Sams pubishing etc.. I never read such book, because PHP Manual is free and beats them all, but sometimes they are usefull.

I'd suggest to learn it you go through w3's tutorial. ( http://www.w3schools.com/php/default.asp )
Or you could search google.
For "learn php" - http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=learn+php

I think this site is pretty good, it's not the best, and I learn mySQL somewhere else, but it's pretty good. One problem it's on a site where you can also learn how to make a p0rn site.. but if you want that it's also good ;)
