To create a gradient, follow these steps:
    • Choose the Gradient tool and click the Gradient Editor button on the Options bar.
The Gradient Editor dialog box appears. At the bottom of the gradient preview, you see two or more stops, which is where new colors are inserted into the gradient. They look like little house icons. Use the stops on top of the gradient slider to determine the opacity.
    • Click a stop and click the color swatch to the right of the word Color to open the Color Picker and assign a different color to the stop.
    • Click anywhere below the gradient preview to add more color stops.
    • Drag a color stop off the Gradient Editor dialog box to delete it.
    • Click the top of the gradient preview to assign different stops with varying opacity.
Assigning varying amounts of opacity using the stops on top of the gradient slider.
    • When you’re finished editing the gradient, name it and then click the New button.
The new gradient is added to the preset gradient choices.
    • To apply your gradient, drag across a selection or image with the Gradient tool.

one way to create a gradient which fades an image to transparency using Adobe Photoshop. This technique can be used to fade an image into the background colour or another image, text, etc.Create a photoshop file with two layers - one blank and the other containing the image to be made transparent. Select the image's layer. Click the Add layer mask icon at the bottom of the layers palette.A layer mask is created in the image layer.Select the gradient tool and apply a black/white gradient to the image layer.

You can either use the blending modes by double clicking on the layer and selecting the gradient option

Or selecting the image, rasterize it and then apply gradient in the tool bar. Press G and apply the gradient
