    What editor do you use?

    I personally still do everything in notepad. I know there are other ones that are 'better' that color code things and auto indent, etc - but I've never found a free one..

    What do you use?

    Notepad when on Windows, vi when on *nix. Never used a WYSIWYG editor, never will.

    winemacs (win) or emacs (linux) though I've used phpeditor for a while. That's for free tools, for paid tools, definitelly Macromedia Dreamweaver for it's highlighting and autocompletion.

    When it comes to using a editing software, i use Macromedia's Studio MX. Great software. Come with Dreamweaver, Flash, Freehand, and my favorite, Fireworks. Great for making the site look great. Also the WYSIWYG is great. Alot of features.

    try creating a php page, start with:

    <?php

    $start = strlen( <- should show you possible variables

    or
    $_SERVER[ <- should show you possible variables and you can click enter to autocomplete
